Davenport Hotel becoming Marriott Autograph Collection

July 10, 2014 — Spokane,WA

Worthy’s Davenport Hotel Collection Franchises with Marriott’s Autograph Collection

It was announced July 10 that the four iconic hotels from the Davenport Hotel Collection will be the first in Washington State to franchise with the Autograph Collection. The Autograph Collection is Marriott International’s newest brand that features independent hotels and resorts from around the world representing upper-upscale and luxury properties with distinctive personalities. All four hotels are set to join the Autograph portfolio by the end of 2014.

Walt and Karen Worthy, developers and owners of the Davenport Hotel Collection and developers of the new 716 room convention hotel, the Grand Hotel Spokane, reviewed several proposals from various national hotel franchises and decided that the Autograph Collection was the very best brand for their unique hotels. Lynnelle Caudill, Managing Director for the Collection stated, “Marriott was looking to have a stronger presence in this market and we were looking for a partner who could help us attract new business to Spokane; and the Autopgraph Collection made perfect sense. The Autograph Collection gives us a tremendous opportunity to leverage Marriott’s industry leading global reservations system, and strong customer outreach through their ecommerce and sales and marketing platforms.”

Corporate Director of Sales & Marketing, Matt Jensen, shared “We wanted to make sure we were aligned with other properties recognized for their uniqueness. Take the historic Davenport Hotel, for example, which celebrates 100 years of service this year. We needed a partnership that would allow us to continue to own and operate our hotels under their current names, while gaining new benefits for our guests, like the valued rewards (points) program and reservation systems for which Marriott is known.”

Matt further explained the benefits of the partnership, which include, having Marriott’s national sales team represent the Collection in their sales efforts, helping to build awareness of Spokane as a destination for meetings and conventions.

“We are thrilled to learn of the partnership between The Davenport Hotel Collection and Marriott International,” said Kevin Twohig, CEO of the Spokane Public Facilities District. “With a national brand like Marriott attached to the new 716-room Grand Hotel Spokane, we know that our region’s marketability has increased substantially, making Spokane more appealing to larger convention, trade show and conference groups.”

“A nationally branded hotel has always been part of our vision for the Convention Center District,” said Larry Soehren, District Project Committee Chair. “This announcement, along with the Spokane Convention Center’s addition of 90,000 square feet of meeting room and exhibit space, creates excitement in our region and increases our ability to compete with larger cities in the convention and event bidding process.”

“We congratulate Walt and Karen Worthy and the entire team at the Davenport Hotel Collection,” said Cheryl Kilday, Visit Spokane President & CEO. “We think the branding with Autograph Collection by Marriott will provide an additional reason for all travelers, including those in the conventions and meetings industry, to set their sights on Spokane,” she continued. All four hotels are set to join the Autograph portfolio by the end of 2014.

The four properties are:
The Davenport Hotel
Davenport Tower
Hotel Lusso
Grand Hotel Spokane

The Davenport Hotel is a 284-room hotel known as Washington’s grandest hotel. Whether it’s the soaring architecture, award-winning amenities, rich history, or simply its proximity to nearby Spokane attractions, The Davenport Hotel has welcomed film stars, explorers, writers, politicians and other luminaries for more than 100 years.

The Davenport Tower is a 328 room contemporary hotel that has become a favorite luxury destination of business travelers, convention clientele and leisure guests. The Davenport Tower embodies Spokane’s downtown nightlife and is located in the center of the shopping and theater districts.

The 48-room Hotel Lusso brings boutique comfort to downtown Spokane. “Lusso” is the Italian word for luxury. It has the warmth and comfort you might expect from a cozy bed and breakfast with the sophistication of a larger hotel. Set in a beautiful 19th-century historic building, The Hotel Lusso caters to the discriminating guest who longs for the perfect getaway while still being in the center of all the attractions Spokane has to offer.

The Grand Hotel Spokane will be Spokane’s newest hotel and one of Washington’s largest. Scheduled to open summer of 2015, the hotel will be connected to Spokane’s new Convention Center and the INB Performing Arts Center. The 716-room hotel will showcase an 18,000 square ft. ballroom and 62,500 sq. ft. of state of the art meeting space and amenities.

Sasquan Hotel Availability Update

  • There are rooms open at the DoubleTree. You can right now book August 20-23. You can then contact the to request adding dates before and after your booked reservation. This is the process which the hotel and housing bureau are requesting.
  • Demand for Tuesday, Wednesday (before), and Sunday (after) are running ahead of our initial contracts. The rooms are still actually unreserved and we are working with the housing bureau to make these rooms available to people who are making reservations. They are being added to our blocks in response to member requests.
  • The DoubleTree is not sold out, but it will be soon. Both Red Lions are close to the convention center and they are nice hotels. No one needs to worry about staying somewhere a long walk from the convention site.
  • The Davenport Hotel, our party hotel, is a beautiful and luxurious facility 990 yards (11 minutes at 3 mpg walk) from the convention site. For people who can’t or prefer not to want to walk, we are researching a shuttle service to run between hotels and the convention center; there hotels also have shuttles for hotel guests.
  • We have been in contact with several other hotels in the immediate area. Should there be demand, we have convenient options for overflow sites.
  • We are managing this process dynamically and incrementally, which means we are not going to add hundreds of rooms all at once. We are going to add hotel rooms over time to meet the actual demand.

Please see the hotel reservation status for currrent information.

    Remembering Bobbie, one year later

Our friend and mentor Bobbie DuFault passed away one year ago, peacefully in her sleep, on September 14, 2013.

Bobbie was a leader in Northwest fandom, being involved with Rustycon, Norwescon, and other activities. There had been efforts to bring a second Worldcon to the region previously, and Bobbie picked up the banner in 2002, starting a bid for the 2005 NASFiC, which was intended to be a launchpad for a future Worldcon. She chaired Cascadia Con, which was a great success, showing off the talents of the region’s authors, artists, and other creative people to a wider audience. In 2012, she chaired Westercon 65, again to bring together and connect the local fan and creative community to a wider audience. She also served as Program Division Head for Chicon 7, working with the global community of authors and other program participants to put together the Worldcon program. Bobbie and her crew of loyal friends and family played essential roles in representing the Spokane in 2015 Worldcon Bid during Renovation, Chicon, and LoneStarCon.

In SWOC and among Worldcon conrunners, we knew Bobbie as a convention organizer, but she touched many other circles in and outside fandom. She was a writer, an artist, an educator, a gamer. As a leader she trusted people, pushed them to accomplish more, and came to command the loyalty of many different circles of people. She was an organizer of Reading for the Future and was the author of Science Fiction and Fantasy in the Classroom, a reference for teachers.

A group of Bobbie’s friends and family gathered at her home in Gold Bar on Saturday for a memorial service in her honor. Many drinks and hugs and stories were shared. Our thoughts are especially with her husband Jerry, her son Pete, her daughter Tiffany, and others closest to her.

For some of us, our work on Sasquan is a way of honoring Bobbie. We invite all who knew her to join with us to help make the 2015 Worldcon a wonderful experience for everyone, to show off the kind of creativity and comradeship that Bobbie was known for. We remember Bobbie, and she would have wanted us to make more great memories at her convention.

The Moon and the Sun — The Film

Paramount has acquired rights for distribution of the period fantasy adventure “The Moon and the Sun” slotting it for an April 10, 2015 release. Members of the ensemble cast are Pierce Brosnan as King Louis XIV, Kaya Scodelario as Marie-Josèphe, Benjamin Walker as Yves De La Croix, William Hurt and Fan Bingbing.

Based on the book by Sasquan GOH Vonda McIntyre. The story combines two major genres: science fiction and historical romance, set in 17th century France, “The Moon and the Sun” follows King Louis XIV’s (Pierce Brosnan) “quest for immortality.” The royal king wanted to capture and steal a mermaid’s life force, a move that is further complicated by his illegitimate daughter’s discovery and befriending of the creature.

The novel has won the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1997, beating out A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. It was inspired by the short story “The Natural History and Extinction of the People of the Sea”, also by McIntyre, which was illustrated by fellow author Ursula K. Le Guin.
